How to adopt AI wisely and fairly in your workplace

How to adopt AI wisely and fairly in your workplace.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems can offer many benefits to organisations, but they also pose ethical, fair, and inclusive challenges. Leaders need to understand how to address these challenges and create a responsible AI strategy.

Here are some personal tips from @Sarah Kaur, a Design Thinking Practitioner at @CSIRO’s Data61, who will be speaking at the @Loops of Learning dinner symposia, Elevate Your AI Strategy with Responsibility and Trust on October 5 at SuperNormal, Melbourne.

  • Assess how AI is used in your organisation. You may be surprised by how many AI tools are already in use, such as chatbots, fraud detection, and search engines. These tools may have been adopted without proper governance or oversight, exposing your organisation, colleagues, and clients to potential risks.

  • Responsible AI considers the full lifecycle of AI systems. This includes ethical data collection, diverse AI development team and use case definition during the design phase, as well as contextual monitoring and adaptation once AI is deployed.

  • Build trust in AI. Trust is essential for the successful adoption of AI, but it is not easy to achieve. According to the @Edelman Trust Barometer, trust in institutions has declined globally. A recent study by the @University of Queensland and KMPG found that only 43% of Australians believe their employer have practices to support the responsible use of AI.

  • Bridge the confidence gap in AI. Educating and informing your employees and customers about AI can help them understand its benefits and limitations, and foster trust. This can be done through internal learning and development, reporting, and encouraging conversations about the impact of AI systems within across business functions and at the board level.

  • Balance opportunity and risk. Many opportunities exist in considering how AI might benefit businesses. However, businesses must exercise caution and strike a balance between being left behind and increasing reputational risk (or actual harm) by implementing responsible AI practices to mitigate risks, ensure transparency, and build consumer trust.
